Camp Workroom Social PJ Party! - Winners

I will be mailing merit badges to everyone who participated this week. I can’t wait to see what you sew them to!

I hope to PJ Party with you again soon!

Fabric inspiration for your campy PJs

Hello campers and friends of CWS! I hope you spent Labor Day weekend prepping your pajama patterns in preparation for our Campy PJ Instagram Party (October 1 here I come!). I can’t wait to spend the day looking at all of your campy pajama sets and addressing merit badges to send to you.

After picking your pattern(s), it’s time to find just the right fabric to make your custom PJs. Do you want to go silky and soft or cozy and plush? Are you thinking about warmer fabrics for colder winter nights, or pajamas that will breathe because you’re a hot sleeper? Many things to consider!

Today we thought we’d share some inspiration to get you to the next step of our sewing challenge and contest. Don’t forget, there are merit badges and sewing machines just waiting for you!

Cotton prints by Elizabeth Olwen at Hawthorne Threads - Fabric inspiration for campy pajamas - Camp Workroom Social PJ Party
1. Hyde Park in Multi / 2. Breezy Floral in Blue / 3. Lush Lullaby in Blue / All fabrics available at Hawthorne Threads.

Cool cottons are always a good choice for people who get hot and sweaty while they sleep (yes, we admit it!) but still want something cute for lounging around with bunkmates afterhours. We love the classic comfort of the Carolyn Pajamas by Closet Case Files, or Grainline Studio’s Lakeside Pajamas in a pretty cotton print paired with contrast binding. To make sure your cotton PJs are comfortable, choose voiles, lawn, or double gauze, which are lightweight and soft against the skin. The other upside of cotton is there are so many prints to choose from. Our own Elizabeth Olwen has a line of cottons at Cloud 9 that we think would be perfect for an easy pair of PJ pants! (After all, nobody said PJs had to be hard!).

Silk fabrics and silk prints from Emma One Sock, Smuggler's Daughter, and Josephine's Dry Goods - Fabric inspiration for campy pajamas - Camp Workroom Social PJ Party
1. Italian “Batiky-Rorschach” silk from Emma One Sock / 2. Celebration Silk from Smuggler’s Daughter / 3. Anne Klein Black/White/Yellow Abstract Silk from Josephine’s Dry Goods

Then we have the S’s—silk (or silk/cotton blends), satin, sateen…all of these luxurious fabrics are a sumptuous choice for patterns like Seamwork’s Lisbon, or the Ogden Cami by True Bias (which we would pair with a simple pair of ladylike boxers, trimmed with something special like a scalloped edge lace). Silks can also be used with any of the patterns mentioned above or with kimonos and robes such as McCall’s M6659.

The caveat? Silks and satins can be a little harder to cut and sew, but don’t let that stop you! Here are some resources to help you through, and my personal recommendation…if you haven’t tried sewing with these fabrics before, PJs are a great project to start. If you mess up, no one will know, because you won’t wear this make out of the house. Campers, I know what you’re thinking, and your fellow campers would never judge, so take a risk and try sewing something slippery this month!

  1. Tips and tricks for cutting silk from Grainline Studios
  2. Top 10 tips for sewing with silk from Craftsy
  3. Nerdy Sewing Tips: working with drapey silks & other slippery fabrics from By Hand London
  4. Seam finishes for silk from Threads
  5. 5 tips for sewing delicate fabrics from Colette Patterns

Knit fabrics from Fancy Tiger Crafts, Gather Here, and Girl Charlee - Fabric inspiration for campy pajamas - Camp Workroom Social PJ Party
1. Bamboo Tie Die Knit from Fancy Tiger Crafts / 2. Artisan Knit by Pat Bravo from Gather Here / 3. Heather Gray and White Stripe Cotton Jersey Blend Knit Fabric from Girl Charlee

Like your PJs to do double-duty as lounge wear/casual clothing? Cotton or bamboo jerseys are breathable, easy to wear, and come in a wide variety of colors and prints. And if you’re sewing pajamas for kids, cotton jerseys are the hands-down favorite; after all, kids’ PJs should be close-fitting yet comfortable, and jerseys let them move and play without complaint. Plus with so many choices from our online fabric shop friends, you can mix and match prints for fun top-and-bottom combinations. We like the Hudson Pant by True Bias for sleepwear in soft bamboo jersey. And if you happen to wear a cotton French terry McCall’s M7296 jumpsuit out, you may be faced with a perfect is-she-or-isn’t-she-wearing-pajamas moment!

Plaid flannel fabrics by Robert Kaufman by Fabric Depot - Fabric inspiration for campy pajamas - Camp Workroom Social PJ Party
1. Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel Fabric Checkered Red / 2. Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel Fabric Stripe Plaid Blue / 3. Robert Kaufman Mammoth Flannel Fabric Plaid Rust / All fabrics available at Fabric Depot.

Finally, what could be more perfectly “camp” than a pair of flannel plaid PJs? (We’ve got our eye on Robert Kaufman’s new Mammoth collection of flannel plaids. Who wants to be twinsies?!). Flannel is warm, cozy, and classic. But take care when matching plaids, particularly at center front (we’ll be posting tips on that soon too!).

Join us for a Camp-inspired PJ party!

Camp Workroom Social 2016 is right around the corner, and we want you to be a part of the Camp family!

Join me, sewists all over the country, and our friends at SINGER® for a Campy PJ Party on Instagram on Saturday, October 1!

Camp Workroom Social PJ Party!

At the end of a long day of Camp, we love to tuck into our coziest PJs and stretch out for a long chat with our bunkmates. We spend hours talking technique and sharing the snacks we stowed away in our suitcases with new friends. Better yet, we leave the door open in case the next bunk over wants to come hang out for a PJ party!

It’s moments like these that make Camp Workroom Social a true sleepaway camp experience. Oh, and those PJs…handmade, of course. We are sewists, after all!

Campers in their bunks from CWS 2015

With CWS less than 2 months away and sold out, we are inviting you to get in on the fun of Camp from home with a sewing challenge, a giveaway, and merit badges (yes, merit badges!) for all who join the party (U.S. residents with valid U.S. mailing addresses only).

To participate, sew a pair of PJs and post them to Instagram on (or before) the day of our Camp PJ Party, October 1. Tag me (@workroomsocial) and your post (#camppjparty, #sewwithSINGER, and #campworkroomsocial) and send us the proof plus your mailing address, and you will be entered in our great giveaway sponsored by SINGER®.

You will also receive your very own, in-real-life Camp PJ Party merit badge!

Camp Workroom Social PJ Party!

After all, the merit badge is one of the most iconic symbols of camp; a tangible reward for your personal achievement, you save them up all summer and then beg your mom to sew them on a favorite T-shirt or tote bag so you can proudly display the proof that you finally learned how to canoe (or make a bra, as the case may be!).

And because our sponsor SINGER® loves our community of sewists so much, they are also offering to give away 2 of our favorite machines. The first is a SINGER® SUPERB™ EM200 embroidery machine ($1,400.00 retail value) — the same machines we used to make our Camp Workroom Social merit badges. (Why yes, we made these badges ourselves! We are DIYers too!). The second is the SINGER® LEGACY™ C440 computerized sewing machine ($899.99 retail value).

The first winner will be chosen by your fellow sewists over 3 days (Oct. 1-3). The second winner will be randomly selected from the pool of entries (because we want everyone to have a real chance at winning!). Check back in late September for details on how to vote for your favorite PJs.

Winners will be announced on Wednesday, October 5. Merit badges will be mailed out that same week.

To help you join the PJ party, we will be posting our favorite techniques, tips, patterns, and PJ inspiration over the next month. Until then, start picking your patterns! Some or our favorite are…

A quilted sweatshirt for chilly nights at Camp Workroom Social

A project to prep for chilly nights at Camp Workroom Social - a sleepaway sewing camp for adults

Last year SVP Worldwide, the makers of SINGER®, HUSQVARNA VIKING®, and PFAFF® created The Sewing Party, the first online DIY conference in history. It was a weekend full of virtual learning in online classrooms and connecting with new sewing friends from all over the U.S. I loved that the event was sponsored by all three sewing machine brands, drawing in sewists of many different interests, experience levels, and aesthetics. Quilters and garment sewers came together to learn new things and find inspiration in projects taught by some of my favorite modern makers. I had a great time teaching the Tate Top by Workroom Social and meeting lots of new-to-me sewists.

This year I am excited to be back at The Sewing Party (TSP) as it transitions into a new project for SVP. The Sewing Party is now the collaborative blog of SINGER, HUSQVARNA VIKING, and PFAFF. TSP celebrates all things sewing—garments, quilting, embroidery, fabric hoarding, seam ripping, triumphs, fails, goals and misses. It doesn’t matter where in the world you are or what you’re sewing with, everyone can join in!

Throughout the year I’ll be blogging over at The Sewing Party, bringing you tutorials to help elevate your me-makes and to get you sewing clothes that are infused with your own personal style. I want to challenge you to get creative, think like a designer, and customize your handmade wardrobe.

A project to prep for chilly nights at Camp Workroom Social - a sleepaway sewing camp for adults

With that in mind, my first TSP project is a quilted faux cable knit sweatshirt, an awesome fall wardrobe staple and a comfy top to wear on chilly nights at Camp Workroom Social. You can get the full tutorial over at The Sewing Party.

Inspired by chunky cable knit sweaters and warm, cozy campwear, I created four original designs for your handmade quilted sweatshirts. The first two are available to download at TSP, but designs three and four are here for you.

I would love to see any sweatshirts you make! Tag me on Instagram (@workroomsocial) and be sure to use #campworkroomsocial, #fauxcableknit, and #thesewingparty.

Which sewing machine will you use at Camp Workroom Social?

Happy Monday! I have an exciting announcement to start the week. Get ready campers…

I am proud to announce that SINGER® has joined us as the official sewing machine brand of Camp Workroom Social!

SINGER joins me in my mission to make good sewing great by providing all registered campers the opportunity to use the 9985 Quantum Stylist Touch at Camp this October.

Campers will find the machine simple to use, and as a result, will get to focus all of their energy on learning and practicing new skills, instead of fiddling with a tricky sewing machine. Like my studio students, I think campers will be impressed with the performance of SINGER’s sewing machine, and the beautiful garments it can help you produce.

We’ve only got a few spaces left at Camp, and I hope you’ll join me, the rest of our staff, and your fellow campers as we learn how to sew clothes and participate in all kinds of campy activities like weaving, archery, and rock climbing. Reserve your spot before they’re all gone!

I can’t wait to sew with you at Camp Workroom Social this October!
